If you could travel back in time to the Ming Dynasty, you would discover that saltwater ducks have long been raised in Hainan.

The tradition has been kept going throughout the years and nowadays ‘Salted Duck’is an exquisite delicacy of Haikou.

Upon your arrival in Hainan's capital city, you will see plenty of restaurants inviting you to taste this special dish. Be sure to head for one of them during your stay.

With a tender and tasty meat, the duck is normally cut into tiny pieces so that you can dip it into a choice of sauces, providing an unforgettable experience for your senses.

The Dongzhai Gang Mangrove Nature Reserve in Haikou's Yanfeng Town is, apparently, the best place to raise saltwater ducks.

Coming from an environment of sea water and water surrounding mangroves, the meat from these ducks is much more fragrant, soft and sweet, making it a unique gastronomic highlight of Hainan.
