Located 25 kilometres southeast of Haikou capital city, Meilan International Airport is the gateway to the wonderful province of Hainan.

The island has been attracting increasing numbers of tourists, so much so that the airport’s expansion plans quickly took off. The airport is forecast to handle 45 million passengers and 600 thousand tons of cargo every year by 2035. Pretty impressive, hey?

Meilan is also considered the largest and most modern on Hainan island, alongside Sanya International Airport. It is also the busiest, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Currently, it connects dozens of cities in different countries including Sydney, Moscow, Rome, Manila and Jakarta, among others.

It’s one-of-a-kind style also wows architecture lovers. Inside the airport, there are two terminals, for domestic and international flights. You can find plenty of restaurants, noodle shops, coffee shops and boutiques selling a wide range of books, gifts, jewellery and travel accessories to keep you amused while you wait for your departure.

Don’t worry if you’ve had a long flight and are feeling tired when you arrive. You will find plenty of transport options to take you to the city center in style. Starting with the taxis, which are readily available. But make sure you only use the licensed ones.

Getting to Haikou by train is also possible. And, if you fancy also visiting Sanya, you can take the high-speed train, with 13 stops along the way.

Buses also run regularly every 30 minutes, from 05:30 am to 09:00 pm. It’s easy to get to Haikou. What are you waiting for?
